HARGEISA – President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo congratulated France’s new President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, for winning the second round of France’s presidential elections on Sunday with 66% of the vote.
Although France and Somaliland do not have full diplomatic relations, the two countries do have informal ties.
In 2014, President Silanyo traveled to France on an official visit after receiving an invitation from then-Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius.
In the congratulatory letter, President Silanyo stated that he hopes to work together with Macron on strengthing friendly relations between the two nations.

On behalf of the Somaliland Government and its people, I wish to extend to you our heartfelt congratulations on your election as the president of French Republic.
Your election demonstrates the confidence that the French people have in your leadership. It is my hope that during your term in office, we shall continue to work together towards strengthening the friendly relations between our two nations. Within the region, we will continue to enhance peace, progress and democracy.
