HARGEISA – Thirteen-year-old Abdihamid Sheikh Moustafa Adam is the grand prize winner of the 2017 Presidential Quran Recital Competition.

The competition, funded by the President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo, is held within the first two weeks of Ramadan, every year.

Seventeen youth from across the country took part in this year’s competition at Ali Matan Mosque, in downtown Hargeisa.

Abdihamid Adam was awarded a car and $2,500 trip to Mecca to perform the religious Umrah pilgrimage. As Adam is legally not allowed to drive, the prize will be handed over to his parents until he reaches of age.

Runner-up Shafi’i Jama from Marodi-Jeh was also awarded a $2,500 trip to Mecca and will flight out to Saudi Arabia with Adam later this week.

Mohamoud Ahmed Ali from Toghdeer and Abdullahi Ismail Jama from Sanaag took home $1000 and $700, respectively.

The annual competition is one of many religious initiatives President Silanyo has introduced since taking office in 2010.
