ERIGAVO – A delegation from Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) led by Chairman Abdikadir Iman arrived in the eastern city of Erigavo on Sunday to prepare for the upcoming voter ID card distribution in Sanaag region.
The delegation was welcomed by regional government officials and regional NEC officials.
NEC Chairman Abdikadir Iman briefly spoke to the press about the mission of their trip upon arriving in the city.
“The Vice-Chairman and I are here to place a strong emphasis on the voter ID distribution process in the region. We are also here to make sure no political or tribal campaigning takes place during the process. Any individual who is caught participating or encouraging those activities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Iman said.
Somaliland’s ruling political party, Kulmiye, and main opposition party, Waddani, were fined by the NEC earlier this week for campaigning during the voter ID distribution process in Togdheer.
The NEC are expected to begin distributing Voter ID cards in Sanaag next week.
