President Silanyo meets with UK Ambassador

HARGEISA – H.E President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo on Sunday received the UK Ambassador for Somalia and Somaliland, David Concar, at Somaliland’s Presidential Palace.

Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire held a joint press conference with Ambassador Concar after the meeting.

“The two sides discussed the historic ties between the UK and Somaliland, the UK’s support for development and economic growth in Somaliland, and the upcoming Presidential Elections”  Shire told reporters.

Ambassador Concar gave reporters a detailed briefing of the UK’s involvement in Somaliland and their support for Somaliland’s Presidential Election.

“We talked with H.E The President about the UK and Somaliland relationship, the various ways that the UK is supporting development in Somaliland, supporting humanitarian relief on the drought and supporting cooperation in others areas, including important security,” Concar said.

“The UK is very concerned about the impact of the ongoing drought to the people of Somaliland, and we commit to doing what we can as a donor working through the UN agencies to deliver the support that the people of Somaliland need to get through this difficult period,” Concar said.

“We have also talked about the upcoming election in Somaliland, which the UK strongly supports and we believe there is an important opportunity for Somaliland to show its people, the region the world that it is sincere to holding a fair and credible and freely contested election. It is a golden opportunity for Somaliland to renew its democratic credentials, and we are working to support the process whatever way we can.” Concar said.

Somaliland’s Presidential Election is expected to be held on November 13th, 2017.
