Edna Adan Ismail named Special Representative for talks with Somalia

Many Somalilanders believe Edna Adna Ismail is the right person for the job.

HARGEISA – H.E President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo on Monday appointed Dr. Edna Adan Ismail as the Somaliland’s Government Special Representative for peace talks between Somaliland and Somalia in a Presidential Decree.

Ismail served as the spouse of the Prime Minister of the Somali Republic from 1967-1969, during her marriage to onetime Somali Republic PM and 4th Somaliland President, Mohammed Haji Ibrahim Egal.

After the restoration of Somaliland independence, Ismail briefly served as the Republic of Somaliland’s Minister of Family Welfare and Social Development and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2003-2006. Ismail has been widely touted as one of the most effective Foreign Ministers in Somaliland history.

Since leaving political life, Ismail has been busy running the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, a non-profit charity hospital in Hargeisa, Somaliland that she founded in 2002.

Many Somalilanders have welcomed Ismail’s appointment via social media, and are hoping that their appointment will move the talks forward.

It is not known when peace talks between Somaliland and Somalia are expected to start, considering the fact that relations between the two countries have been tense since Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was elected President of Somalia earlier this year.

Since his election, Farmaajo has attempted to destabilize Somaliland on several occasions and has publicly insulted Somaliland’s government and citizens on many occasions.
