HARGEISA – Somaliland’s Interior Minister. Yassin Haji Mohamoud Faratoon held an urgent press conference on Tuesday afternoon condemning the failed assassination attempt on newly-elected House Speaker, Bashe Mohamed Farah.

MP Saleeban Ali Kore and his driver attempted to kill Farah outside the headquarters of Somaliland’s Parliament on Tuesday morning. Both Kore and his driver are currently in custody.

Kore, and Waddani MPs are supporting Abdirahman Talyanle, Waddani’s candidate for Speaker, who lost the election to Farah by one vote. Talyanle says he is the actual winner and has declared himself Speaker of the House.

Minister Faratoon told Talyanle’s camp to accept the election results in the press conference and gave a stern warning to any individual(s) planning to instigate more chaos.

“Both Kore and his driver are currently in custody and will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Faratoon said.

“There will be no two House Speakers. The election is over. Waddani’s candidate for Speaker, Abdirahman Mohamed Talyanle accepted the results right after it was over. If he or his party feels that something went wrong during the election, there is a proper way to express their concerns,” Faratoon said.

“Waddani’s recent actions are causing civil disorder and havoc in Somaliland. We will not tolerate any more incidents over this issue. Any individual who chooses to ignore this warning will be arrested and prosecuted to fullest extent of the law,” Faratoon said.

Waddani has yet to condemn the assassination attempt on Somaliland’s House Speaker, Bashe Mohamed Farah.
