HARGEISA – Somaliland’s representative to the UAE, Bashe Awil Omar, reaffirmed the Government’s confidence in DP World’s management of Berbera Port, in an interview with BBC’s Somali Service on Thursday (Sep 16).
“DP World is a large international company that has investments in over 40 countries. If DP World wasn’t capable of managing our port, our government wouldn’t have sought their business,” Omar told BBC’s Somali Service after being asked about the opposition’s criticism of DP World’s progress.
“DP World has proven that they are capable of managing and expanding our port,” Omar added.
Somaliland’s main opposition party, Waddani, has been claiming within the past couple of the weeks that DP World has abandoned their Berbera port concession in favour of Somalia’s Bosasso Port.
P & O ports, a company owned by DP World, signed a $336 million deal with Somalia’s north-eastern region of Puntland in April 2017 to manage and develop the port of Bossaso.
“I do not agree with the recent statements made by Abdirahman Irro and his colleagues. Our port has made significant strides since DP World’s takeover. The opposition shouldn’t damage Somaliland’s reputation with these statements. If their claims are true then they should provide evidence backing it up,” Omar added.
