HARGEISA – A former Silanyo cabinet minister who served in President Silanyo’s government since 2010, resigned from the national campaign committee of the ruling political party, Kulmiye, on Sunday, less than 24 hours after being named by the party’s leader.

Ali Hamud Jibril, who most recently served as Somaliland’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Technology and Research, before being sacked in July 2017, was named as one of the inaugural members by Kulmiye leader, Musa Bihi Abdi, on Saturday (Sep 30).

Jibril announced his resignation from the committee via a telephone interview with HCTV on Sunday.

“I have decided to resign from the committee for personal reasons. I am not speaking on behalf of the Vice-President, Abdirahman Ismail Saylici, I am speaking on behalf of myself, Ali Hamud Jibril,” Jibril told HCTV.

Jibril, who is a close confidant of Saylici, and grew up in the Saylici household during his childhood, was fired last July for falsely telling fellow cabinet Ministers that President Silanyo ‘was on his deathbed’, while he was away in the UAE.

According to sources familiar with Jibril’s firing, Jibril attempted to set up a government while Silanyo was away in the UAE, and asked several cabinet ministers to forward their CV’s before the President ‘passes away’.

Jibril’s firing on July 27th, came two weeks after the President’s return to the country on July 14.

Jibril’s decision to resign from Kulmiye’s campaign committee has many wondering whether Vice-President, Abdirahman Ismail Saylici, is also currently at odds with the party.
