NEC releases final figure of eligible voters
81% of registered voters picked up their voter ID cards during the distribution process.

HARGEISA – Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) released the final figure of elibile voters for Somaliland’s 2017 presidential elections on Tuesday (Oct 10) during an event at NEC headquarters.

The announcement of the final voters list was attended by senior cabinet officials and representatives from the three political parties.

According to the NEC, 704,089 registered voters across the country picked up their voter ID cards over the three month process in mid-2017.

Earlier this year in March, NEC Spokesman, Said Ali Musa, announced that 873, 331 citizens were registered to vote for the elections.

It is widely believed that the majority of the 167, 242 registered voters that didn’t pick up their voter ID cards, were prevented from doing so due the deadly drought that crippled the nation within the first half of 2017.

Below, is a regional breakdown of the final eligible voters for Somaliland’s 2017 presidential elections:

AWDAL: 102, 571 eligible voters

MARODI-JEH: 249, 229 eligible voters

SAHIL: 60, 817 eligible voters

TOGDHEER: 147, 440 eligible voters

SOOL: 63, 698 eligible voters
