HARGEISA – Somaliland’s Ministry of Public Works and Transportation on Sunday, unveiled a new smart card with seven security features on October 16th, that will replace the existing registration book for vehicles and cars driven by motorists in Somaliland.
The launching event of the new smart vehicle registration cards was attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works led by Minister Ali Mohamed Hassan, officials from Somaliland’s traffic police and the Ministers of Presidential Affairs, Finance and Industry.
Khalid Sheikh Muhumed, the Director of Global Tech Solutions, the company contracted to modernize Somaliland’s vehicle regisration system, gave a brief address on the important significance of the new system.
“The process to modern vehicle regisration in Somaliland was a long process, that was done in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Finance,” Muhumed said.
“The current vehicle registration book, that has existed since the 60’s, will now be replaced with a smart ID cards. Somaliland will now join one of the few countries that have implemented this system,”
“This new system will also provide officials with the exact amount of previous owners for any vehicle,” Muhumed added.
Somaliland’s Finance Minister, Zamzam Abdi Adan, also spoke at the event and praised the new system and its features.
“It will help strengthen our national security ,vehicle taxation, and solve many problems that we’ve had with the current book,” Adan said.
