HARGEISA – Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) met with the women’s wings of the three national political parties on October 28th, in an attempt to tame the nasty campaign tactics being used by political parties since the start of the campaign.
NEC Chairman Abdikadir Iman Warsame, who was chairing the meeting, started off by sending an emotional message to female politicians, calling on them to view the campaign problems from a ‘mother’s point of view’.
“We called you all because you are mothers that are involved in politics – you are the only ones that are shocked by the actions of our youth. We want you all to help us,” Iman said.
“As you’ve seen within the past round of campaigning, there have been several issues – party flags are being burned, and our youth are arming themselves with knives,” Iman said.
“Who ever will end up sitting on the presidential seat, has already been determined by Allah. We should support and congratulate which ever candidate wins – we cannot accept the actions that we’re witnessing take place in front of us,” Iman said.
Representatives from the women’s wings of the three parties were also given a chance to speak, and promised the NEC and the people of Somaliland that they will do everything in power to calm down the youth and ensure peaceful campaigning.
