National Electoral Commission condemns voter ID buying incident

HARGEISA – Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) sent a stern warning to the nation’s three political parties on Monday, after three individuals were arrested for allegedly buying 62 voter ID cards from poor Hargeisa residents.

NEC Chairman, Abdikadir Iman Warsame, held a press conference at the commission’s headquarters after police announced the arrests on Monday, denouncing the inciden

“62 voter ID cards were confiscated by police, after they were illegally bought. It isn’t a shame for political parties to take part in such acts? Shouldn’t they have made their supporters aware of the consequences of such actions?,” Iman said.

Iman also called on the police to quickly prosecute the three individuals to the fullest extent of the law.

Iman also stated that the NEC has asked the police to quickly prosecute any individual that engages in voter ID buying.
