HARGEISA – The Chiefs of Somaliland’s armed forces and national police force held a joint press conference on Thursday, after deadly riots erupted over election fraud claims from main opposition party, Waddani.
General Nuh Tani, Chief of Staff of Somaliland’s Armed Forces, and Abdullahi Fadal Iman, Somaliland’s National Police Commissioner, urged all party supporters to protect Somaliland’s peace and stability
Both Tani and Iman also pledged to arrest all individuals inciting election violence and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
Seven people were killed in deadly riots in Hargeisa and Burao on Thursday evening. The exact number of wounded individuals is currently not known.
NEC Chairman, Abdikadir Iman, also pledged on Thursday to launch criminal cases against the senior Waddani officials who claimed that forged ballot papers were used in the Nov 13 presidential election.
The results of the presidential election haven’t been announced yet, and will mostly likely be postponed until the opposition party forfeits their claims of election fraud.
