HARGEISA – The Government of Somaliland hopes the European Union and the United Kingdom will help fund the 250 km Berbera Corridor project, Somaliland’s Foreign Minister announced last week.
In an interview with The Reporter Ethiopia on October 20th, Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire said the UAE is currently the only contributor for the $90 million project.
Shire hopes the EU and the UK will contribute to the project, and said that Somaliland could also seek additional funding from Ethiopia.
“At present, the amount of money mentioned will be provided by the UAE. But, we hope EU will also contribute. We hope UK will also be contributing to the project. If that’s not enough; we will ask Ethiopia to contribute as well.” Shire told The Reporter.
Shire also said in the interview that a company has already been ‘selected’ to design the construction project and that the tender for the construction of the Berbera Corridor will be issued after the design is complete.
