Hargeisa Deputy Mayor joins ruling political party

Hargeisa's Deputy Mayor is now a member of the ruling party.

HARGEISA – Abdiaziz Mohamed Hashi, the Deputy Mayor of Somaliland’s capital city, Hargeisa, announced on Tuesday night via a video post on Facebook page, that he has decided to join the ruling political party, Kulmiye.

Hashi was elected as a city councillor for south-east Hargeisa in the 2012 municipal elections, on the UCID party ticket.

Shortly after his election to city council, Hashi was elected Deputy Mayor by his fellow city councillors.

Since becoming Deputy Mayor in 2012, Hashi has been relatively pro-government and has good relations with the ruling Kulmiye government, despite being a member of UCID.

Hashi’s departure from UCID, officially gives Kulmiye full control of Hargeisa’s local government, as the Mayor of Hargeisa, Abdirahman Soltelco, is also a member of Kulmiye.

Hashi’s decision to join Kulmiye is expected to have a major effect on his constituency, who have traditionally aligned themselves with UCID since 2003. UCID’s Presidential Candidate, Faisal Ali Waraabe, hails from Hashi’s constituency and hails from the sub-clan as him.

Hashi instantly hit the campaign trail for Kulmiye in south-east Hargeisa on Wednesday morning, during the party’s second official day of campaigning.
