HARGEISA –  A former Somalia government official hailing from Somaliland who served in the administration of former Somalia President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Hargeisa last week. (Aug 21).

Yussur Abrar, an American-Somalilander, originally from Awdal region, was seen on the grounds of Egal International Airport last Monday, according to airport officials and witnesses who were present.

Sources close to Abrar are stating that she was granted a pardon by President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo before her arrival.

Somalilanders who held political positions in Somalia must receive a presidential pardon and renounce their unionist beliefs before entering the country, as per Somaliland’s constitution.

It is not known whether Abrar has renounced her unionist beliefs, as she is scheduled to speak at an event in Minneapolis, USA next month discussing the future of Somalia.

Abrar briefly served as Somalia’s central bank governor in 2013. Seven weeks into her term, Abrar resigned from her post, and penned a public resignation letter accusing senior officials close to President Mohamud of forcing her to illegally wire public funds. Abrar left Somalia after her resignation and hasn’t held a political post in the country since.
